From Our Pastor
Are you prepared for what God wants to do next in your life? He may have shown you the direction in which He wants to lead you. You may have already seen Him open the door. Or, you may just have a restlessness as you sense God stirring your heart. Are you prepared for what He wants to do?
How do we prepare for the next phase of God’s plan for our life? We learn some important lessons in Joshua 5. In this chapter, Israel is in a time of transition. They have crossed the Jordan River, and 40 years of wilderness wandering is over. They are about to begin the conquest of the promised land of Canaan. However, before they moved into that chapter there were some key actions they needed to take. These actions serve as lessons for us before we move into a new chapter of our lives.
First, we need to remove anything that would hinder God blessing us. In verses 1-9, Joshua had the Israelites circumcised. Because they had been in the wilderness for 40 years, none of the Israelites born in that period had been circumcised in keeping with the covenant God gave Abraham (Genesis 17). Before the Israelites began the conquest, this issue needed to be resolved.
It is the same for us. Before we can move into a new chapter, we need to remove any hindrances in our Christian walk. This would involve sin and any compromise. If we want God to open the door and lead us into the next chapter, we need to deal with any and every hindrance.
Next, we must walk by faith in what God will do in this next chapter. For 40 years, God had supplied manna to Israel. They lived by faith in God’s provision by manna. They now had to live by faith in God’s provision through the land. In verses 10-12, the manna stopped. The Israelites still had to trust God’s provision, but it would now be through the land.
As we go into the next chapter of God’s plan, we must do so by faith. He may work differently than He has until this point; however, we must trust Him.
Last, we need to commit to obedience. In verses 13-15, the Lord appeared to Joshua as the captain of the host of the Lord. The message was clear. The Lord was in command – not Joshua. Joshua’s leadership was actually obedience unto the Lord.
If we are going to move into the next chapter, we will need to recognize the Lord’s authority and commit to obeying Him. Even if we are leaders, we are really just followers who are obeying Him.
God may be preparing you for a new chapter. Take this time to prepare yourself. Be ready to leave the wilderness and go to the promised land.
