From Our Family and Music Minister

This past Sunday, many of us either spent time celebrating with our mothers or took a moment to remember them on Mother’s Day. I hope it was a meaningful time of sharing memories or making new ones for you. As I thought back on the Mother’s Days I was fortunate enough to share with my own mom, I couldn’t help but laugh at all the unnecessary gifts I gave her over the years.

One memory stands out in particular. One year, my grandfather took me to TG&Y to pick out a gift. As soon as we walked in, I spotted a kid’s microphone system that I just had to have. So, naturally, I figured out how much money I’d have left if I bought it, and whatever was left over, that’s what I used to buy my mom a Mother’s Day present. I have no idea what I ended up getting her that year. It couldn’t have been much, but I still remember that microphone like it was yesterday.

That memory got me thinking about how often we do the same thing with God. We spend our time, energy, and resources on everything that catches our attention, and then we offer what’s left to Him. Instead of putting Him first, we offer Him our leftovers.  Like our mothers, God receives even our smallest offerings with grace. But that doesn’t mean He shouldn’t receive more.

In Mark 12, Jesus observes a poor widow placing two small coins into the temple offering and tells His disciples, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had.” (Mark 12:43–44, ESV). Her gift wasn’t impressive in the eyes of the world, but in God’s eyes, it was priceless, because it was given from the heart.

The truth is, God isn’t after a specific dollar amount or a perfectly polished life. He’s looking for people who love Him enough to give Him their best. He wants people who trust Him enough to give sacrificially, generously, and joyfully. It’s not about earning His approval; it’s about honoring Him because He first loved us.

So what would it look like if we gave God our “firsts” instead of our “leftovers”? What would change if we approached Him with the same love and intentionality we try to show on special days like Mother’s Day? Maybe it’s waking up a few minutes earlier to spend time in prayer. Maybe it’s using our gifts to serve in ways that stretch us. Maybe it’s prioritizing our relationship with Him above all the noise and distractions of the world.

As I think about my mom and the love she gave so freely, I realize she was pointing me to something greater all along. Her patience and love were a reflection of a perfect love- the kind of love our Heavenly Father offers us every day.

Let’s take the time this week not just to remember our mothers, but also to reflect on the One who gives us life and love. And let’s be intentional in offering Him more than just what’s left over.
