From Our Family and Music Minister
Many young people will walk across the graduation stage over the next month, stepping into an exciting but overwhelming new season of life. They now face countless decisions that will shape their future: what courses to take in college, what career path to pursue, which friendships to cultivate, and how to handle financial responsibilities that could impact them for years to come. But above all, the most important decision they will make is what they will do with God.
It would be great to believe that all young people who were active in strong church groups will stay connected to their faith. However, research paints a sobering picture. According to a study from LifeWay Research, about two-thirds (66%) of American young adults who regularly attended a Protestant church for at least a year during their teenage years say they dropped out for at least a year between the ages of 18 and 22. Sadly, many do not return even after those early adult years. I believe a big part of this trend comes from the lack of a genuine, personal relationship with Christ as well as the loss of accountability once they leave the influence of their parents, youth leaders, and close Christian friends.
The 2020 pandemic revealed how fragile that connection could be in many ways. As churches reopened and resumed regular schedules, many young people—and adults—struggled to return. It shows how easy it is to drift when gathering with God’s people isn’t a priority and done regularly. Yet God’s design is clear: He calls us to be part of a local church so that we can continue to grow, encourage one another, and resist the pressures of the world around us.
If you find yourself slipping into complacency, I challenge you today to set aside daily time to seek the Lord. Decide now how you can help your church reach the lost and be the encourager someone else might need. If you faithfully study Scripture, serve actively, and encourage others, I encourage you to continue and stay strong. God will use your faithfulness to impact His kingdom in ways you may never see until you reach heaven.
Who holds you accountable? Who are the people who encourage you to stay close to Christ? Keep those people near. As you think about the graduates in your life, pray that they will continue to trust the Lord with their future. I pray that you strive to be a Godly example to which they can look.
As Proverbs 3:5–8 (ESV) reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”
