From Our Family and Music Minister

Some of my friends become “hangry” if they have not eaten in a while. If you are unfamiliar with the term, it is when someone becomes irritable or moody due to being hungry.

But can you remember a time when you have genuinely been hungry? Most of us are fortunate enough always to have food; it may not be what we want, but we have access to some form of sustenance.

No matter how deep our desire for physical food is, our desire for spiritual food should be more significant. Just as our body needs food to grow and be productive, our spirit needs food to develop spiritually. So many times, we try to fit Bible study and prayer into a short daily or weekly task. But growing through prayer and study should be done daily. It should be so ingrained in our lives that we miss it when we don’t have it.

11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD,
when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the LORD.
12 They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the LORD,
but they shall not find it.

Amos 8:11-12

The Lord revealed to the prophet Amos that as a result of the Israelites turning away from Him and seeking out false gods, they would go into exile. Although people would be searching for the Lord and His Holy Word, He would no longer answer the prayers of His people. On that day, the Holy Spirit would no longer be there to guide, protect, or care for the people. People would beg God to forgive their sins and to deliver them. However, they would receive no answer from the LORD. Unfortunately, people today who continually reject the Word of God could find themselves unable to find it.

As a youth, I was fortunate to be able to go on a couple of mission trips. While in Romania, I heard stories of congregations being dispersed with fire hoses. I met a pastor who only had one page of the Bible that he smuggled in and preached from for over a year. In Mexico, we would show up to a village to do a service, and all work would stop. Everyone would come to the building they had set up as a church, and they would stay as long as we were there. They didn’t complain about the service’s length, the temperature in the room, what song was sung, or if the pastor had a good delivery. They were hungry for God’s Word because they had been without it.

I am the first to admit that I sometimes get too complacent in my relationship with Christ. But I challenge you to have a continuing hunger to grow your relationship with Christ. Some experts state that your body could survive without food for over a month, but you would be weak, sick, and your body would start shutting down. The same thing happens when we starve ourselves from the Word of God. We become spiritually weak, sick, and unable to fight off spiritual attacks.
