From OUr Family and Music Minister

Many young people will graduate from high school during the next few weeks. They now have many decisions to make that will affect their future: the choice of courses they take in college to prepare them for future work; the choice of friends that will influence them; and financial decisions that could hurt them for many years to come. However, most importantly, they will decide what they will do with God.

Of course, we can say that many young people who have been active in strong church groups will continue to be a part of the church. However, according to a new study from LifeWay Research, two-thirds (66%) of American young adults who attended a Protestant church regularly for at least a year as a teenager say they dropped out for at least a year between the ages of 18 and 22. Unfortunately, after 22, many don’t return to church at all. I believe the decline in attendance comes from a lack of a true relationship with Christ and from no longer having accountability from parents, youth ministers, and friends.

In reality, the past pandemic showed how our current young people would handle their newfound independence. Unfortunately, as churches returned to full-time schedules, youth and adults have not placed a big importance on returning to church. God desires for us to be a part of a local church so that we can continue to grow in Him and be able to resist the temptation of the world around us.

If you have become complacent over time, I hope you will commit to setting time aside daily for the Lord. Decide today how you can help your church reach the lost and what part you can play. If you are one of those many who faithfully study your Bible, actively serve in the church, and encourage others, please continue to be faithful. God will use your faithfulness to grow His kingdom.

Who holds you accountable? Who do you have in your life that encourages you to be a better Christian? Make sure you keep those people close. As you think about the graduates in your life, pray for them that they will continue to trust in the Lord. Strive to be a Godly example for them.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”
