From Our Pastor

Have you ever faced a problem that seemed not to have a solution?  Every conceived solution either would not work or would only make more problems.  The situation was even worse if it was obvious that time was running out to solve the problem.

This was the situation for Israel in Exodus 14.  God had wonderfully delivered them from Egypt, and they were camped beside the Red Sea.  Suddenly, they look up and see Pharaoh pursuing them.  Their idyllic camp was now a death trap.  They had nowhere to go.  They had the Red Sea ahead of them and Pharaoh behind them.

How do we handle such times?  As we read Exodus 14:13-15:31, we see how God led Israel to handle the crisis.  While this episode is unique, the general lessons apply to every problem.  These lessons ought to guide us as we face problems.

The first lesson is that we need to trust God.  In verses 13-14, Moses tells the people not to fear.  He further tells them that they will never see Pharaoh again.

What a reminder for us!  God knows every problem that we face.  He is with us.  God has a plan and will personally fulfill that plan.  We need not worry or fear.  We should bring every problem to Him in trust (Matthew 6:33; Philippians 4:6-7).

The next lesson is the need for obedience.  God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea.  God told the Israelites to walk on the ground between the two walls of water.  Moses and the Israelites did as God commanded.  As a result, they were delivered, but Pharaoh and his army drowned.

What an example for us!  When we face any problem or situation we need to go to the Scriptures for God’s instructions.  Our decisions ought to be the implementation of God’s instructions.  We need to obey even when God’s instructions don’t make sense or are even completely the opposite of our ideas. Only in obedience will we experience God’s deliverance.

The third lesson is that we need to learn from the experience.  Verse 31 says, ā€œWhen Israel saw the great power which the Lord has used against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in His servant Moses.ā€  Israel learned the power and love of God by witnessing His destruction of Pharaoh.  This had been God’s intention throughout His dealings with Pharaoh (Exodus 6:6-7; 9:16; 10:1-2; 14:4).  God used Pharaoh to teach His people about Himself and His ways.

It is the same for us.  He fully intends to carry us through the problem.  He also intends to use the situation to grow and mature us.  We need to learn what He desires to teach.

Last, we see the need for praise.

Exodus 15:1-21 records Israel’s praise to God for His work.  As we see God more in our problem, we need to praise Him.

Seemingly helpless situations are often the times that God most clearly works and reveals Himself.  We need not despair in such times.  God is about to work in a wonderful way.
