From Our Pastor

This week we celebrate Palm Sunday.  That is the day we remember the Lord Jesus Christ entering Jerusalem for His final week of ministry.  We refer to this day as Palm Sunday because many in the celebrating crowd cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road (Matthew 21:8).

Even the nonbelieving world is aware of those facts.  But, as believers, what do we remember about that event?  What is the true significance of that day?

We find the answer in Romans 5 as the Holy Spirit led Paul to clearly explain the Gospel.  In verses 1 and 5 we see what our Lord was doing and why He was doing it.  It is here we find the significance of this day.

Verse 8 begins, “But God demonstrates His love toward us…”  The wonderful, amazing and incredible truth is that God loves us.  He tells us in Jeremiah 31:3, “…I have loved you with an everlasting love…”  The Eternal, Almighty, Sovereign God personally loves us.

While God’s love for us is amazing to consider, it becomes even more amazing when we think about our condition.  Verse 8 continues, “…in that while we were sinners…”  Earlier in Romans, Paul clearly spelled out that we are sinners in our hearts and in our actions.  The result of our sins and sinfulness is God’s eternal judgment.

That brings us to the reason the Lord Jesus entered Jerusalem.  Verse 8 concludes “…Christ died for us…”  The reason that Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem was to be the perfect one-time sacrifice for our sins and to rise again.  Our Lord’s crucifixion was not an unfortunate turn of events.  It was God’s plan.

What is the result of Christ’s death and resurrection for those who trust Christ for salvation?  Verse 1 says, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  The Lord Jesus entered Jerusalem to make us eternally right with God.  He came to die and rise again to give eternal life.  What a reason to worship on this day!

Every calendar has “Palm Sunday” on today’s date.  The unbelieving world knows the basic facts of this day.  Only believers have the truth in their hearts.  May we truly praise and give thanks this week.
