From Our Family and Music Minister
Running sound has been a side gig since high school—though the income makes it feel more like a hobby. A few years ago, I upgraded my gear, selling most of the heavy equipment and keeping only what Saskia could help me set up and move. Some things, though, ended up in storage “just in case.”
As Saskia and I were cleaning out my workshop last week, she had already passed the point of asking me what something was and why I still had it. I came across speaker cables my dad had bought me back in 1995. Those speaker cables had played music as kids sang in their first talent show, as brides walked down the aisle, as people raised money for a great cause, and as believers in Christ sang praises to Him. But now, with my newer system, they are entirely useless after being used on almost every sound job for 27 years. While that may be the fate of old speaker cables, it is never the fate of those who serve the Lord faithfully.
In God’s kingdom, usefulness is not determined by physical strength, social status, or age but by faithfulness. A Christian who devotes their life to serving God doesn’t grow obsolete; instead, they grow stronger, more fruitful, and more valuable in His sight. God doesn’t abandon His servants when they grow older or when the world might label them “used up.” He continues to sustain and carry them. Isaiah the prophet wrote, “even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save” (Isaiah 46:4, ESV).
If you’ve ever felt like your best days are behind you, or you have nothing left to offer, Isaiah 46:4 is God’s reassurance. He doesn’t set you aside when your hair turns gray, or your pace slows down. Instead, He promises to carry you, to bear your burdens, and to keep saving and sustaining you. You are still His, still called, and still valuable in His purpose because He’s not finished with you yet.
We can also be encouraged through Psalms 92: “The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age. . .,” (Psalm 92:12–14, ESV). Even in later seasons of life, faithful believers are still bearing fruit, still impacting others, and still being used by God until the day they are praising His name in the Heavenly Courts.
So, unlike that speaker cable, a life given in service to God has never lost its usefulness. You are not replaceable or forgettable in God’s house. He sees your faithfulness and promises to be with you every step of the way.
Keep serving. Keep growing. In God’s eyes, you are never worn out.
