From Our Family and Music Minister

Almost 30 years ago, Lorna Nolin took on the task of starting back a Children’s Choir.  As with most church activities, my Mother told me I was going to participate.  As we prepared for the upcoming Christmas program, I was given one of the main parts.  I had no trouble learning the singing parts, but the speaking parts were another story.  To this day, I still don’t memorize well.

As we started practicing in the sanctuary, Ms. Lorna realized I didn’t know my speaking parts yet.  Since I had speaking parts in pretty much every scene, she did the only thing she could do…Ms. Lorna made a copy of the script and took it to my Grandmother.  Yes, she skipped right over my parents and went straight to Gammy. Those of you who don’t know, my Grandmother was a school teacher,  principal, and ran a private kindergarten. By the way, by the “next practice, I knew my lines.

With the beginning of the new year, most of us make new year’s resolutions. Among Christians, this usually includes reading the Bible, participating in Bible studies, or doing personal devotions; however, we must be careful about what we study, what speakers we listen to, and what books we read. Never before have we had so many resources to help us grow in our Biblical walk as we do right now.  Everything we “take in” should be able to be tested with Scripture itself; however, many times, books and Bible studies are based solely on a passage taken out of context.

As the new year begins, I pray that you will make Bible study a daily routine.  I know of many commentaries, devotions, and teachers that are excellent at teaching the Word.  But make sure that you are not ignoring the passages that GOD wants you to learn from or are not only listening to teachers that make you feel good. In Paul’s second letter to Timothy, he warns him that this will happen:

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires." 
(2 Timothy 4:3).

When Ms. Lorna wanted me to learn my speaking part, she didn’t play around; she went straight to the sources who would get it done. We must not forget that all teaching should be compared to God’s Word itself when we want to deepen our understanding of our Heavenly Father.
