From Our Pastor
How frightening and unsettling are these times! Everywhere we look we see uncertainty and unrest. We are constantly bombarded with propaganda to heighten wise concern to terror and panic. Realizing there is such an agenda gives even more reason for alarm. These truly are disturbing days.
Yet, God has a clear message for us in these days. In Isaiah 41:10a God says, “Do not fear…”
What?! How can we not fear in these days? How can we not be alarmed when the whole world is coming “unglued”?
Fortunately, God did not just tell us not to worry. In the rest of the verse, He told why we don’t need to worry. These reasons for not worrying will change our lives and living.
God first reminds us of His presence. He said, “Do not fear, for I am with you…” God has not left us to face these times on our own. In Matthew 28:20, our Lord promised, “I will never desert you nor will I ever forsake you.” God is with us. He has never left us. He will never leave us. We need not be given over to fear because God is with us.
Next, God reminds us of who He is. The next phrase says, “…Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.”
Who is this God who says, “…I am your God?” He is the great “I Am” (Exodus 3:14). This God, who is with us, is the sovereign, almighty, creating and ruling God.
What problem can He not handle? None. What exceeds His power and ability? Nothing. Is anything beyond His sovereign control? No. What is there to fear when such a God is with us? Not one thing.
The last reason for not being given over to fear is God’s personal work in our lives. God concludes the verse by saying “…I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” God is not merely watching us go through these times. He is not with us just so we will not be alone. He will actively work in the situation with His unlimited power. Like David in Psalm 23, we need not fear because the Shepherd is leading, providing, and protecting us. We can rest securely in Him.
We need not be given over to fear as we live in these days. The Almighty God is with us and is working on our behalf. We can rest in Him.
