From Our Pastor
âWho is a God like You?â (Micah 7:18). What an appropriate question! Our salvation depends upon having the right answer. A growing Christian walk depends upon an increasing understanding of the answer.
Fortunately, the Holy Spirit not only inspired Micah to ask the question but also gave him some key answers. These are not the only characteristics of God nor are they the complete description of the characteristics given. But they serve as a wonderful beginning of knowing God.
First, God is sovereign. He rules over everything. He is in complete control of all things at all times. Micah has already addressed this in the verses leading up to verse 18. He described Godâs judgement and future restoration of Isaiah. Godâs work will shock the nations of the world and cause them to fall before God in broken submission.
Our God is sovereign. He is in complete control of this world. Even this worldâs rebellion is part of Godâs plan to fulfill His plan for eternity.
God is also sovereign in our lives. Every circumstance, opportunity, problem, need or crisis is under His control. We may be surprised by our lifeâs events, but God is not.
God is also merciful and gracious. He has not already judged us for our sins. He has provided salvation through Jesus Christ. Verse 18 says, âWho is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious act of His possession? He does not retain His anger foreverâŠâ
What a source of comfort and assurance! Salvation is provided. Forgiveness and cleansing is available for the Christian. We are accepted by the Sovereign God by His own grace.
Last, He is a God of love. Verse 18 concludes, â⊠because He delights in unchanging love.â Everything God has done or will do in our lives is because of His love. His love for us motivated His grace to save us. Every plan He has for us was conceived in love. He chastens us because He loves us. Eternity will be the unbroken, unhindered experience of His love. We canât begin to comprehend the wonderful love of God.
âWho is a God like you?â What an appropriate question! The answer is the most important truth in time and eternity.
