From Our Family and Music Minister
As the new year begins, most people are setting goals for things they want to accomplish in the upcoming year. If you are like me, you haven’t even started on the list you made last year. As we set our goals, we must consider if we are keeping God at the center of those goals. As Christians, we can be guilty of compartmentalizing our lives, especially when it comes to worship, work, and play. We give God our main focus on Sunday. However, the rest of the time, He may be along with us for the ride, but we keep Him in the back seat with the radio turned up, so we aren’t always hearing His instruction.
When we go to work each day, we should treat our job as another opportunity to worship God. Jesus is Lord over all, so there should be no division in our lives. Everything we do, everywhere we go, at any time of the day, is under God’s control. That means that our work belongs to God. We read in Colossians 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Living your Christian values in the workplace is not only commanded by God but can also be a rewarding experience.
One of the most critical things we can do to live out our Christian values in the workplace is to start each day spending time with God. We must ground ourselves daily in our faith before entering the workplace. Satan will never miss an opportunity to pull us away from God. Therefore, starting our day in God’s Word and with prayer will keep us focused on Him and help us resist the temptations that satan throws at us.
While in the workplace, we must also be mindful that we must reflect our beliefs. We must treat everyone with respect, kindness, and integrity, regardless of their beliefs. We represent Christ in everything we do and, therefore, should reflect His character. We can also be a source of hope and encouragement for other employees. Offer a helping hand to colleagues, celebrate their successes, and be a source of support during difficult times. A positive attitude can make a real difference in the lives of those around us.
We can also display our beliefs in our work ethic. We must show our dedication and commitment to our job, not just because it’s expected of us but because it reflects our desire to do the best always with whatever task God puts before us. How we interact with our boss, the respect we show for him, and the tasks he gives us reflect heavily on our character and who we are as believers.
As Christians, we are called to be different in the world around us. When non-believers interact with us, do they truly desire to have what we have? Do we bring them closer to Christ or push them away? Living our faith at work is not a destination we will reach; it is a journey we will always be traveling. There will be setbacks along the way, but we must glorify God in all we do, and in doing so, we will positively impact our workplace and the coworkers around us.
