MID-WEEK DEVOTION

From Our Pastor

One of my favorite Christmas songs is “What Child Is This?”  The music and the lyrics are beautiful.  But, it’s the question posed in the song that captivates me.  “What Child Is This?” is a question we must answer for Christmas, our lives, and our eternity.

God has clearly answered the question in His Word.  One such passage is Matthew 1:18-23.  The passage begins with Joseph planning to divorce Mary because she was expecting.  But, before Joseph could follow through with his plans, God sent an angel to give Joseph understanding and guidance.  The angel’s message tells us who this Child is.

The angel tells Joseph the child has been conceived by the Holy Spirit.  He goes further by telling Joseph the Child will be named Jesus which means “Jehovah saves.”  The prophecy quoted in verse 23 makes the Child’s identity clear by saying He is “God with us”.  This child who had not yet been born was the Eternal God.

But, this child was human.  The Baby was a baby.  He would be an infant.  He would grow into a toddler.  He would grow into a child.  He would become a teenager.  He would grow into a man.  God became a man in every way.  He was literally “God with us” because He became one of us.

The angel told Joseph why God became man in Mary’s womb.  Verse 21 says, “She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”  The miraculous birth was accomplished to provide a Savior.  God became one of us (yet without sin) to save us from our sins.  He came to die and rise again to save us.

The angel also made it clear that not only would Jesus be the Savior, but He would also be the Sovereign King.  The angel referred to Joseph as a Son of David.  It had been centuries since being of King David’s line meant anything.  The angel was making it clear that this Child was the long-awaited Messiah.  God’s Word tells us He will return as King of kings and Lord of lords.  The day is coming when He will be recognized and obeyed.

“What Child Is This?” is such an appropriate question.  He is God who became man to save us from our sins and return as king.  No wonder we celebrate His birth!  But He is worthy of more than celebration.  He is worthy of our trust, love, obedience, and deepest reverence.  That is the correct response to “What Child is This?”
