From Our Family and Music Minister

The introduction of electricity was a major historical event in our world. Many people were stunned by its introduction and thought it intimidating, scary, and unnecessary. Not everyone was impressed when the news got out that Edison was developing the first practical electric light bulb. A British Parliament Committee wrote that Edison’s light bulb was “good enough for our Transatlantic friends… but unworthy of the attention of practical or scientific men.” However, today, we can’t imagine life without it. Unfortunately, those who cannot benefit from it often experience life in darkness. Similarly, the birth of Jesus completely changed the course of the world. Those who accept Him as Savior can benefit from His life instead of remaining in the dark.

The story of Christ’s birth was a historical moment that forever affected the world and everyone who will ever live in it. The birth of Christ introduced the next step into our Heavenly Father’s plan to restore the brokenness that came about in the Garden of Eden. In Luke 2, we can read how Mary and Joseph journeyed from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register for a census. While they were there, Mary gave birth to our Savior. This wonderful news was shared with the nearby shepherds through the angel of the Lord, and they came and worshiped Him.

Sometimes, we can get stuck in our world with our problems and become blind to others in our community. We can become so focused on our issues that we lose our desire to show grace and act generously toward others. The holidays can sometimes highlight the “Grinchy-ness” we have in our hearts because of the pressure to buy and receive gifts and because we feel entitled that things be a certain way. We want to receive a gift from a special someone, or we have a pity party when holiday plans don’t go our way.

As Christians, we should be able to find a way to be grateful in any circumstance. Sometimes, we find ourselves upset when we have to go on a family vacation during Christmas, when we can’t make the Christmas party at school, or when we have to celebrate at a boring or difficult family member’s house. Mary and Joseph similarly were dealing with not so comfortable circumstances. We can assume it wasn’t her dream scenario to have her child in a stable and keep him in a feeding trough for animals. But instead of being a Grinch, Mary was grateful for her blessing, and this moment in their lives became the very day that we celebrate worldwide. When we remember how our Father’s love saved us, we can find plenty of reasons this holiday season to have a generous heart, not a Grinchy heart, toward God and others, despite our circumstances.
