From Our Family and Music Minister

John Wesley was known as an influential Christian leader, theologian, and founder of the Methodist movement. Wesley dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel and challenging believers to develop a deeper relationship with Christ. Wesley was also recognized as one of the great preachers of the Great Awakening, a series of religious revivals in the 18th and 19th centuries that led to significant spiritual growth in America and Europe. He also impacted Christian worship by writing and translating numerous hymns, many of which are still sung today. His legacy remains a testament to how one man’s faith and dedication can transform lives and expand God’s kingdom.

Probably, few people are aware of the difficulties he faced while preaching. It is estimated that he traveled more than 250,000 miles on horseback and preached more than 40,000 sermons. But no matter what, he was known for always keeping his speaking engagements. In one of Warren Wiersbe’s books, he tells this story about John Wesley.

While crossing a bridge in London, John Wesley sprained his ankle and was taken to the home of Mrs. Mary Vazeille. This widow with several children cared for him. In response to her kindness, he impulsively asked her to marry him. If this were a novel, we might say it was fate—but in reality, the marriage was a disaster. Mary wasn’t suited for Wesley’s demanding lifestyle, struggled with constant travel, and ultimately opposed his ministry. She even shared and altered his personal letters to damage his reputation. Once, she even pulled him around on the floor by his hair! He believed his unhappy marriage pushed him to work harder and not dwell on what he was missing at home.

John Wesley didn’t let tough times stop him from doing what he was called to do. In the same way, there will be moments when God asks us to go through struggles for His sake. Knowing that he belonged to Christ kept Wesley going. This same thing should keep us going. And because we are His, we will also face hardships along the way.

Are you going through a rough patch? Following Jesus means sticking with Him, even when things get complicated. He sees what you are going through, walks with you through every challenge, and one day, He will reward your faithfulness. When life gets hard, keep going because faithful believers have Christ on their side.
