From Our Family and Music Minister

With access to social media, I occasionally see into the lives of people with whom I used to associate in school. Unfortunately, one of the sins of which I am guilty is being judgmental when I see them talk about their belief in Christ, or say that they are trying to raise money for a need, or post pictures from church. My mind goes back to their past when I considered them bullies. I saw a post recently from one friend about something religious, and I remembered that we had a Bible teacher quit mid-year because of him and some of his friends. But isn’t God amazing? Scripture shows that God chooses imperfect people to accomplish His perfect will.

David, one of Israel’s greatest kings, was far from perfect. He committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged for her husband’s death. Yet, despite his failures, God still used him. David repented with a sincere heart, and God continued to fulfill His promise through him. Jesus, the Messiah, came from David’s lineage. This reminds us that God values a repentant heart over someone who thinks he is always perfect.

Jonah was called to preach to Nineveh but ran in the opposite direction instead. He didn’t believe the wicked city deserved God’s mercy. Even after being swallowed by a great fish and eventually obeying God, Jonah still struggled with bitterness. Yet, despite Jonah’s heart, God used him to bring an entire city to repentance. His story shows that God’s plans are greater than our stubbornness, and He can work through us even when we run in the opposite direction.

Before his conversion on the road to Damascus, Paul was a fierce persecutor of Christians. He approved of the stoning of Stephen and did his best to destroy the church. Yet, God transformed him into one of the greatest missionaries of all time. Paul went on to write much of the New Testament and spread the gospel to the Gentiles. His life is a powerful testament that no one is beyond God’s grace.

So before you judge someone for their past, remember that God can get a hold of their future. Maybe you feel like you are too flawed to be used by God. Always remember no past mistake, weakness, or flaw is too big for His amazing grace. Like David, He can restore you. Like Jonah, He can redirect you. Like Paul, He can transform you. Trust in His power, and let Him use you for His glory.
