From Our Pastor

One of the most amazing truths in God’s Word is that God wants to use us as part of His plan for the ages.  He not only saves us from the judgment we deserve but calls us to serve Him.  Ephesians 2:10 say we are “…created in Christ Jesus for good works.”  Our Lord tells us that we are to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16).  He has commanded us to be His witnesses (Mathew 28:18-20).  He gives each of us a unique ministry in a local fellowship (Romans 12:4-5).  God desires to use each of us as part of His eternal plan.

How can we effectively fulfill that plan?  What must we do for God to use our lives in a way that impacts eternity?  How does that plan become reality in our lives?

We don’t have to theorize or struggle for an answer.  God Himself tells us how we can serve Him.  In Zachariah 4:6 God says, “…’ Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, ‘says the Lord of hosts.”

To serve God effectively, we must first see the God we serve.  “The Lord of hosts” is a reference to our Lord’s authority and reign over all the angels.  That means He has authority and kingship over everything.  Our Lord is the sovereign, unlimited, living, and active God.  Only when we see Him in His greatness can we begin to serve Him.  Any genuine service to God begins with a heartfelt awe of who He is.

Next, we must see our complete inability to serve Him in our own strength and abilities.  “Not by might nor by power…” means that it is not by our resources or by our ability.  We have nothing that can bring God’s plans to fulfillment.  We have no ability to fulfill God’s plans.  Sure, we can perform tasks, activities, and events.  But, we are incapable of accomplishing anything of any real eternal significance.  The recognition of our inability to serve God is a crucial step in effective service to God.

What can we do?  We must put our complete trust and dependence upon Him.  “‘…but by My Spirit, ‘says the Lord of hosts.”  That means we allow Him to lead in what is done and how it is done.  It means we trust Him to do what He wants done and how it is done.  We trust Him to accomplish what He wants to accomplish in what He leads us to do.  We must trust Him from the initial leading all the way through the end results.  Any genuine work of God is the power of God.

Does such an approach work?  Yes!  In verse 7, God says, “What are you, O great mountain?  Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain; and he will bring forth the top stone with shouts of “Grace, grace to it!’”  When we recognize our inability and trust God alone to accomplish the work to which He has called us to do, nothing can prevent His use of us to fulfill His purpose.

Believer, God wants to use you.  Turn your eyes upon His greatness, recognize your inability and trust Him completely.  Your life will have an eternal significance.
