From Our Pastor
As we celebrate Christmas, we should remember that Godâs purpose was to bring us to Himself. He wants us to have an eternal relationship with Himself. In Matthew 1:23b, the angel told Joseph, ââŠâThey shall call His name Immanuel,â which translated means, âGod with us.ââ When we trust Christ for salvation, we experience the ongoing reality of God with us.
As believers, God is with us individually. In John 14:16-18, our Lord promised the Holy Spirit to His believers. Our Lord promised that the Spirit will be with us as He had been with the disciples (verse 16). In verse 17, our Lord said the Spirit would be in us. Our Lord clearly stated His oneness with the Spirit in verse 18.
Believer, God is personally with you. When you trusted Christ, He came to live in you. This is why Christianity is not a religion but is a relationship with God. This is why the focus of the Christian life needs to be on knowing Him. Everything else should come from knowing Him. He is with us individually.
God is also with us corporately. In Matthew 18:20 our Lord said, âFor where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.â The key element of a Christian gathering (worship service, Bible study, Sunday school, etc.) is the presence of God. He is personally present. Meeting Him in such times should be the objective and agenda.
God is also with His people uniquely. While God is omnipresent, His experienced presence is only for believers. Moses recognized this in Exodus 33:16 when He prayed, ââŠIs it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people how are upon the face of the earth?â As a fellowship our distinguishing feature should not be the buildings, activities, worship schedule, or even ministries. Godâs presence among us ought to be our identifying feature. Even non-believers should see the presence of God in our midst.
Our Lord is Immanuel â God with us. As we celebrate His birth let us draw near to Him and walk with Him. May His presence be seen in our lives and in our fellowship.
