From Our Pastor

I hope you are planning on attending this year’s Harvest Banquet.  Rev. Jason Jones, Pastor Wellness Catalyst with the Georgia Baptist Mission Board will be bringing God’s Word in our worship service.  Our Host and Hostess committee will prepare the meal.  The Finance Committee will be providing the desserts.  It is always a special day.

Why do we have Harvest Banquet?  On the surface there is the obvious reason for the day.  Harvest Banquet provides extra funds for the church to operate.

Harvest Banquet began almost 30 years ago to help the church through a very tight financial period.  In order to make it through that time, the church stopped giving to the cooperative program (the means through which Southern Baptists support missions).  The church felt convicted about this and began looking for a way to “catch up” on what they had not given.  The idea of a special banquet was proposed.  The event provided funds to make up what had not been given to missions.

The church then decided that the banquet should become an annual event to safe guard against budget short falls.  The Harvest Banquet account helps cover times when offerings are low or when expenses (often repairs) exceed money on hand.  This not only covers those problems but provides a safeguard for the missions offering.  After that first Harvest Banquet the church never again wanted to be slack in its missions’ contributions.

On a deeper level, Harvest Banquet is a time of expressing humble thanksgiving unto God.  The Harvest Banquet offering which is beyond and separate from our normal offering is a statement that we recognize that everything we have has been given by the Lord.  It is a time of thanksgiving for God’s lovingkindness.  This is why it is called “Harvest Banquet”.  We look at the wonderful harvest God has given and give thanks.

Harvest Banquet is also a time of faith.  When we give to God, we not only thank Him for His promise for today we are also trusting Him to provide for the future.  When we give, we are committing ourselves to God’s care.

This Sunday will be a special day for us.  Yes, there is the obvious aspects of receiving an offering.  But, behind that offering is a time of meeting with our Lord.  It is a time for us to humbly thank and trust our wonderful Lord.
