From Our Pastor

How should we serve God?  There are so many voices that try to give us an answer to that question.  There are too many books, websites, podcasts, conferences, and seminars to count.  Some are good.  Most of them are just religious marketing.

A far better source is our Lord’s instructions to the twelve disciples in Matthew 10:1-15.  While the specifics of these instructions were for those men at that point in our Lord’s ministry, there are general lessons that can be seen.  It is these general instructions that give us guidance in serving the Lord.

The first lesson is to do what God calls us to do.  While the specifics were unique to this time, we see our Lord had a clear task He wanted them to accomplish.  They needed to focus on that task alone.

It is the same for us.  God has called, gifted and given us for a particular ministry.  It is that ministry (or ministries) to which we need to give our effort.  The old expression “Just because there is a need does not mean there has been a call” is so true.  We need to focus on the work God has called us to do and trust Him to call others to other needed work.

Second, we need to do God’s work God’s way.  Our Lord gave the disciples very specific instructions for this task.  He had a clear plan for His work to be accomplished.  The disciples were to follow that plan.

The same principle applies to us.  While the specific instructions were for the disciples in that task, this episode shows the importance of following the Lord’s instructions.  We are not called to be clever or innovative.  We are called to be faithful and obedient.

Next, we see the need for trusting God to supply the needed resources.  Our Lord provided for the disciples so they could fulfill His calling.  When we seek to do God’s work God’s way, He takes the responsibility of providing for us.  We can trust Him.

Last, we see the lesson of trusting God for the results.  Our Lord clearly showed that the disciples were not responsible for the results.  As Charles Stanley stated in his 30 Life Principles, we need to “Obey God and leave the consequences to Him.”  Faithful obedience is our responsibility.  God fulfilling His plan is His responsibility.

God has called each of us to serve Him.  We’ll only experience His blessing if we serve Him His way.  Let’s be faithful.
