MID-WEEK DEVOTION

From Our Pastor

Election day is only a few days away.  In fact, early voting is currently available.  The nation’s attention is riveted on the possible results.  There is the obvious question of who will win.  There are also questions about the acceptance of the results and the effects of either agenda being implemented.

What should believers do in this time?  While this world is not our home, we do have responsibility as citizens of this nation.  We have been blessed to live in this nation and should joyfully exercise the right and privileges that we have been given.

What are some specific things we should do?  First, we need to pray.  We need to pray for God to bring this nation to Himself for His glory.  We have horribly sinned against God and must return to Him.  Our prayer must be that this nation would turn and once more be a shining city on a hill.  We must pray that God will give victory to the candidates who would best fit God’s agenda.  If there was ever a time to pray for our nation, it is now.  She desperately needs God.

Next, we need to educate ourselves.  What do the respective candidates really believe and seek to accomplish?  What is the platform of their party?  What is their position on the issues?  How do their values align with God’s?  We must look past personality and advertising to see the mindset of the candidate.

Third, we must vote.  We have been given the blessing of self-governance.  Like all blessings, this brings responsibility (Luke 12:48).  Our Lord has commanded us to be faithful with what He has entrusted to us until He returns (Luke 19:13).  Various surveys have shown that roughly half of professing Christians do not vote.  We must take seriously the blessing and responsibility of voting.

Last, we need to follow up.  We need to follow up with prayer.  We must pray that God guides and even forces the office holder to do what is right – even if they don’t want to!

We must also follow up by being in contact with our elected officials.  We should sign up for their emails and read their press briefings.  We need to contact them about proposed legislation.  We should seek to influence them into taking the right action and thank them when they do.  Voting is not the end of our responsibility as Christian citizens.  It is merely the beginning.

We are blessed with the freedoms and liberties that God has given to us in this nation.  Let’s be good stewards of those blessings.
