From Our Family and Music Minister

Over the years, I have taken many different age groups on many trips. One of the earliest trips I remember was taking a group of girls to Camp Pinnacle. We started early since I would have to drive over 500 miles in my old Astro van that day. Even though I only dropped off three girls, they packed for a month, so I played Tetris, getting all the suitcases packed. With a mom, another youth, and three excited girls, we were off, prepared for the long trip ahead.

About ninety minutes into our trip, we had to make our first stop. So, I pulled into a convenience store. As the other adult walked into the restroom, I stood where I could watch one of the girls in the store and the youth and two other girls in the van. Then, I turn for less than a minute, and all the luggage is scattered across the parking lot. As I rushed out to the van, I asked the youth, who seemed unaware of the issue, what was happening. Calmly, the youth explained, barely glancing up from her own book, “One of the girls wanted a book to read.” Her book just happened to be in her suitcase at the bottom of the pile of luggage.

Looking back on this humorous incident reminds me of how often our carefully laid plans unravel without warning. In Proverbs 16:9, we read, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” We often think we’ve covered every possible detail, neatly arranging our lives like those suitcases in the van. Yet, inevitably, something shifts, something unexpected occurs, and our careful plans tumble out, leaving us panicky and scrambling.

Thankfully, God’s wisdom surpasses ours, and His view is eternal. Isaiah 55:8-9 reassures us: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

God is not telling us not to prepare or to avoid planning but rather to hold our plans loosely, be open to interruptions from God, and trust Him with the outcomes. I eventually got all of those suitcases packed back in place. In the same way, God rearranges our lives for His purpose, guiding us through each unexpected turn.

I pray we all learn to embrace God’s interruptions not merely as inconveniences but as opportunities to see God’s grace and will at work. Keep an open mind when your plans change. You never know when God is trying to get your attention. Life’s best stories and greatest spiritual lessons often come from the luggage we didn’t plan to unpack.
