What a difference the Lord Jesus Christ brings into our lives. He not only saves us from eternity in Hell, but He also gives us a life of joy, richness, and fullness. John 1:4 says, “In Him was life and the life was the light of men.”

This life is seen in the seven miracles recorded in the Gospel of John. While the primary purpose of these miracles is to show that Jesus is the Son of God, they also lead to life in Him (John 20:30-31).

This is certainly true in the miracle of turning the water to wine (John 2:1-12). This ability clearly shows Jesus Christ as the Sovereign Lord of creation. The miracle also shows the difference in our lives when we believe in Him.

Consider the objects used by our Lord in this miracle. He used stone waterpots. They had no special power. They weren’t even full.

What a picture of us. We are lifeless. We can’t meet the need for wine. In fact, we are not even filled with water!

Think about the purpose of the waterpots' ceremonial washing. That means a religious ritual of washing the hands (Mark 7:1-4). While this probably helped with germs on the skin, it couldn’t touch the sins in the heart. The best such religious practices can do is to show us we are all dirty sinners and need a cleansing that only God can give through Jesus Christ.

What does Jesus do? After ordering the waterpots filled with water, He changes the water to wine. In the Old Testament, wine illustrates the fullness, richness, and blessing of God (Psalm 104:15). In the New Testament, it is used to illustrate the filling of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Our Lord took these waterpots that weren’t even filled with water and changed them so they were not only full but could share wine with others! What a change!
